How to get your koi and goldfish to use a fish dome

Quick answer: Give your fish a few days, release a few floating food pellets just under the rim so they float up into the dome, keep the dome in one sunny spot and keep it clean. Most fish start swimming in within a few hours to a few days.

You have set up your FishView, the dome is full of water, and now you are waiting for the first fish to swim in. Some fish are curious and explore it within hours. Others are more careful and need a few days. Here is how to help them.

1. Give them time

A new object in the pond is something fish need to get used to. It is normal if they swim around the dome for a while before going in. Most fish start exploring within a few hours to a few days.

2. Put some food inside

The easiest trick: put a few floating food pellets inside the dome. Release them under water just below the open rim, and they float up into the dome. Fish have to swim up into it to get them, and once they have found the way in, they usually come back by themselves.

3. Keep the dome in one spot

Fish learn where things are. Moving the dome around every day makes it harder for them to get used to it. Choose a good spot and leave it there.

4. Choose a sunny place

A spot in the sun helps, because fish enjoy warmer water. It also makes your fish look their best inside the clear dome. Keep an eye on hot summer days and make sure your pond has enough shade and oxygen, as you would anyway.

5. Keep the dome clean

A clear dome is more inviting, and it gives you the best view. Clean it only with a soft microfibre cloth, to avoid scratches.

Safety first

  • Watch how your fish and other animals use the dome, especially in the first days.
  • Take FishView out of the pond if freezing or severe weather is expected.
  • Do not lean or sit on the dome, and do not put heavy objects on it.
